New Feature Online: ‘Short Changed: The Rise Of The Free Album’

‘The Teac Life’, the album Legowelt released for free last summer.
In what I hope to be the beginning of features published by Data Transmission on a regular basis, I have a penned an article looking at the rise of the ‘free’ album. The feature explores the increasing trend of producers slaving over albums, making something rather special and then spiting orthodoxy by offering it away as a free download on their websites. I wanted to know why producers were doing this, how they were compensating for the loss of revenue and how they saw it affecting the music industry in general. Speaking to Tin Man, Legowelt and Defected boss Simon Dunmore about their take on it all, the article explores the arguments for and against free albums, as well as offering links to my personal top five free albums of the last year (or so).
