Danuel Tate – Mexican Hotbox

Review:
Drawing on his varied sensibilities (acid jazz, house, swing), Cobblestone Jazz keyboardist Tate offers a debut album as varied and sizzling as the title would suggest. Flitting between all-out 4/4 tracks, such as the disco-horn-tastic If I Want To, to the piano infusion of OK Then¸ Tate refuses to let one style or tone dominate. Where he succeeds most is in the tracks which use a careful pinch of each element; Careful Mind is a phenomenal mix of jazz brass, dark techno beats and house strings. If there’s any criticism, it’s that at times the record feels like a collection of works rather than a cohesive album. However, this is an enigmatic and idiosyncratic outing that demands repeat listens.
